Pass the Family Health Care Decisions Act
|

Dear Senator/Assemblyman :
I urge you to support of The Family Health Care Decisions Act.
As a resident of New York State I find our current laws governing a family member’s right to make health care decisions on behalf of an incapacitated loved one severely limiting and antiquated. Too often family members are left helpless to end their dear one’s suffering or to let them pass on peacefully. This scenario is played out every day in hospitals and health care facilities throughout New York State.
I find it disturbing that legislation to correct the inequity of our health care decisions laws was recommended by the Task Force on Life and the Law in 1992 and has been introduced in each of the past three legislative sessions but has not been enacted.
Each day that goes by without legislation empowering relatives of loved ones to make decisions on behalf of those who have not expressed or cannot express their wishes regarding life sustaining treatment is a day of frustration and despondency for terminally ill persons, their families and healthcare providers as they are left powerless to make ethical health care choices.
I urge you to do the right thing and give the power for families to make health care decisions for their incapacitated loved ones back to the good people of New York by acting on the Family Health Care Decisions Act (A06993 or S05522) this session.
Sincerely,
|
